The Textiles

All of our textiles are made using traditional techniques of weaving on either a backstrap loom or foot loom. Both methods of weaving are deeply rooted in the rich cultural heritage of Guatemala and are an important way of preserving indigenous traditions and artistry.

Each one of our textiles was created with intention, drawing from existing patterns and motifs that originate from specific regions in Guatemala. These patterns represent ideas and beliefs that come from ancestral stories, the wildlife of the region, family history, faith and religion, and community traditions.

We try to honor the deep and intricate roots of this art and the stories of the generations of weavers who have so beautifully brought them to life throughout the centuries. By using patterns and motifs from traditional textiles and presenting them in a modern way, prioritizing simplicity and repetition and experimenting with new color palettes, we hope to share this rich history with you in a way that can be incorporated into your life and wardrobe.

The true designers of these textiles are the generations of weavers who poured their hearts and souls into these stunningly personal pieces of art. We thank them for their gift that we now have the honor of reimagining and sharing with you.

Textile Care

Because of the handmade nature of these textiles - from the creation of the design, the selection of threads, the organization of the loom, to the weaving process itself - some small imperfections or inconsistencies should be expected. They only add to the beauty and individuality of each piece and mean that every item is completely and uniquely yours.

Backstrap Loom Textiles

Found in: The Valentina Strap

This beautifully simple loom, made from a series of wooden sticks, is worn around the waist of the weaver and tied at the other end to a tree or post. With this simple equipment the most intricate designs can be created. It is meticulous work and often entails many days of work to complete one single textile.

Back-strap loomed textiles are incredibly strong and durable but you should try to avoid plucks, pulls and stains wherever possible.

If plucks or pulls occur then you can cut away loose threads with scissors, being careful not to pull on them. Trimming loose threads will not affect the integrity or strength of the weave.

These textiles should be spot cleaned only with cold water and a gentle soap.

You may use a fabric protector on the textile portion of your products to help avoid stains if you wish.

Foot Loom Textiles

Found in: The Zuri Belt Bag, the linings of the The Juniper and Carmen Bags

Foot looms are much larger, more complex looms that allow for faster production of less heavily patterned textiles. Preparing the threads and organizing the loom is intense work, requiring careful calculation and incredible attention to detail to ensure that the threads are in their correct position for the final design.

The whir and click of these wooden looms as the weaver work with both hands and feet in unison is utterly mesmerizing.

Plucking and pulling is very unlikely to occur in foot loomed textiles because of the type of weave, but we would always recommend treating them with care.

These textiles should be spot cleaned only with cold water and a gentle soap.
